    Notes

    • Dad (Edwin Snr.) served in the RNVR from 16 Jan 1904 to 16 Jan 1907 with Dick Leggatt. The first recorded entry that can be seen (so far) from the copy of his diaries that niece Toni sent me per Wynne (sister) says that he went out with F.B. (Florence Beezer) on 16th of January 1907.

Notes made by Dad (Edwin Snr.) in his small notebook re the name 'Malkin'

MALKIN - Malkin is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "Girl". It dates from the 10th Century and the first reference in print is in "The Age of Chivalry" by Arthur Bryant, who describes that a John Malkin, in 1250 brought an action for some damage done by dogs to his pigs.

Malkin Tower, in the novel "Lancashire Witches" by Ainsworth, is a location of an ancient building on Pendle Hill, near the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire named "Malkin Tower" supposed to have been destroyed by the De Lacy family who came over with William the Conqueror who built his Castle at Clitheroe with the stone from "Malkin Tower".

There are the Malkin Hills on the South East of Nottinghamshire.

The name of Malkin appears in Corinthians, Langlands "Piers Ploughman", also in Chaucer's Tales of the 13th Century. In Duma's "La Assommon" ??, Scott's "Ivanhoe", Shakespeare, Gissings "Born in Exile"and many Lancashire books.
