Notes: Karori Cemetery in Wellington is New Zealand's second largest burial ground, the final resting place of about 85,000 people, occupying nearly 40 hectares (100 acres) of rolling, bush-clad hillsides. With abundant native birdlife, sweeping scenic vistas, and many fascinating graves it provides an inspiring venue for an absorbing tour.
The cemetery was established in 1891 to replace the older, overcrowded cemeteries in the centre of Wellington. From the first burial in August 1891, it provided the final resting place for thousands of people.
Located close to the wildlife sanctuary Zealandia, and bounded by the native bush reserve Otari-Wilton's Bush, it forms part of the corridor for native birdlife moving between nesting and feeding sites throughout the city's green belt.
